    Department of Therapy

Department of Therapy was established in 1962 to the year. The first head of the department when it was established in 1962 was MD, professor Teyyub Afandiyev. Now the department is situated within the Republic Clinical Hospital named after M.A.Mir-Kasimov. The department consists of several sub-departments: 1) Cardiology (70 beds), 2) Allergology (40 beds), 3) Endocrinology (40 beds). The allergology and endocrinology branches of the department have been established in 2000 year. Education basis of the Department of Therapy is situated on the 5th floor of the Azerbaijan State Advanced Training Institute for Doctors named after A. Aliyev (ASATID). There are different diagnostics and treatment cabinets in the department such as ECG room, x-ray room, modern laboratory, intensive therapy and reanimation blocks, physiotherapy and manual therapy rooms, etc. Doctors, who doesn’t work more than 10 years after graduating the Medical University, are directed to the therapy department for two months post graduate education under leadership of docents and assistants of the department. More than 115 doctors carried these courses since 2012 year. The department realizes courses of specialization and general improvement on therapy on themes of cardio pulmonology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, allergology, detected problems of therapy, etc. Employees of the department hold distant trainings in regions of the Republi624 doctors carried out these improvement courses during the last two years. Main profiles of the department are: 1. Cardio vascular diseases, 2. Bronx-pulmonary system diseases, 3. Diseases of the intestinal tract, 4. Allergic diseases, 5. Nephritic diseases, 6. Blood system diseases, 7.Diseases of endocrine system. In 1979-2011 years Prof. Nuraddin Humbatov was a director of the department and he had established department of cardio-rheumatology in 1984. Prof. N.M.Humbatov and other employees of the department Prof İ.İ.Mustafayev, docents Z.Z.Pashabeyli, S.B.Jamalov, S.Kh.Mehdiyev, Z.G.Ahmedova, A.N.Humbatova, assistants R.N.Mammadova, G.H.Hajiyeva played great role in improvement and training of doctors in the Republic and scientific research works carried out within the department. As the result of the carried scientific research works 31 master theses and 2 doctor theses have been defended till now in the department. Since 2011 year Phd. Prof. I.I.Musatafayev executes responsibilities of director of the department. He defended master thesis on theme "Effect of antihypertensive drugs on blood lipoproteins" in Scientific Cardiological Centre of USSR in 1985 and since that year works at the State Institute of Development of Doctors named after A.Aliyev. He defended doctor thesis "Hormonal homeostasis during prolonged antihypertensive therapy of men with hypertension" in 2005 and started to work as a docent to the department of therapy in 2006. In 2007 he became a professor. Prof. Mustafayev is an author of more than 133 scientific works including 3 monographs, 3 methodical recommendations, one manual for doctors and one clinical protocol most of which have been published on leading foreign journals. He is a vice-president of Cardiological Society of Azerbaijan, member of European Cardiological Society, national coordinator of global research organization "Singlelife".
    The Department of Cardiology

The Department of Cardiology was established on September 7, 2009 on basis of the I Functional Diagnostics Department. One of departments of the Azerbaijan State Advanced Training Institute for Doctors named after A. Aliyev when it was established in 1935 year was the department of therapy which was established within the Clinical Hospital #2. The first director of the department was M.I.Mgebrov (1935-1939). At that time education capacity was limited and personnel was very small. Only 4 assistants and 1 post graduate student worked at the department. The first researches had been done at the department in those years. Number of improvement courses was small and the number of post graduators taking part at the education proses was limited – nearly 10 persons. The main directions of research works of the institute were "Studying of aetiology and pathogenesis of agranulocytosis" and "problems of malaria and tuberculosis epidemic in districts of Azerbaijan". The director of the department during 1939-1956 years was M.M.Yagubov. He had graduated the Medical Institute in Kiev in 1923 and first of all he had organized high level educational and pedagogical proses in the department. Lectures which the Prof. M.M.Yagubov had read were comprehensive, and differed with substantial analysis and interpretation of clinical problems. They were "Pathogenesis of leucosis and brucellosis", "Cardiac decompensation of pregnant women". He is the first doctor who published information about treatment of lung pneumonia and abscess using penicillin. Beginning from 1939 till 1956 annually the department organized 2 professionalizing courses during 6 months and improvement courses during 5 months. The main directions of scientific researches held that years were problems such as pathogenesis of leucosis, clinique and duration of brucellosis, pathogenesis, clinique and duration features of hypertension. Docent of the department S.M.Gusman defended Doctor Thesis in 1952 under the direction of Prof. M.M.Yagubov. Altogether 6 Medical PhD and masters have been educated in the department during 1939-1956 years under the direction of Prof. M.M.Yagubov. Beginning form 1956 till 1980 year Prof. Solomon Gusman was a director of the department. During this period number of beds in the department increased from 80 to 305, equipment supply of the department had been improved, bloke of functional diagnostics had been established, diagnostic and bio-chemical laboratories were enlarged. S.M.Gusman was one of firsts who studied blood morphology at gastric cancer and hematosis related to bone marrow, and researched the effects of chronic benzene intoxication to blood system. At the same time employees of the department had studied condition of peripheral blood during anemia, coronary disease, stenocardia and hypertension diseases. Since 1960 year scientific research activity of the department covers problems such as coronary disease , hypertension and pathogenesis, clinique and treatment of atherosclerosis. As the result of implemented scientific researches prof. Gusman had studied and developed classification of atypical forms of myocardial infarction. This classification was highly evaluated at the Global Medical Conference held in Prague. In 1962 the II Therapy department was established within the institute in order to increase the number of courses for doctors’ improvement. Scientific research works on coagulation and anti-coagulation systems and the exchange processes, as well as study the amount of vitamins B1, B6, C in organism in various diseases were carried within the department at those years. Besides it, research works on coronary disease and hypertension was going on. At next years specialists of the department studied one more problem – insular diabetes with direction of Prof. M.A.Alekberov and director of the department. Results of implemented scientific researches have been attracted at doctor and master theses. Under the direction of Prof.S.M.Gusman 6 doctor theses and 30 master theses have been defended. Employees of the department docents H.M.Rahmanova, I.I.Mamadov, R.H.Aliyeva, A.F.Hajiyev, assistants C.G.Aliyev, S.A.Alizadeh, T.Kh.Azizbekova, H.A.Listengarten, M.N.Yeryomina, L.H.Atakishiyeva and others have done great works for medical science during their activities within the department. E.M.Safarova, N.F.Vekilova, T.Guliyev, O.Zeynalova who were assistants and docents of the department at those years currently are working at the Azerbaijan State Medical University. In 1978 the Department of Therapy had been jointed to the department of Functional Diagnostics and department called I Therapy and Functional Diagnostics Department. Thanks to it, capacity of department increased – staff was enlarged, number of improvement courses increased. Besides it, the department organized courses in different districts of the republic, in health care facilities of Baku and Sumgayit cities. After death of Prof.S.M.Gusman in 1980 Prof.M.A.Alekperov was a director of the department till 1995 year. He worked at the department from 1955 year beginning as an assistant. He became a docent of the department in 1963 year. During his direction period 7 theses have been defended at the department. Beginning from 2005 year the department is called the Department of Internal Diseases and Functional Diagnostics with staff including one professor, 6 docents, 6 assistants, 6 laboratory assistants. In 2009 year the department have been renamed and called "The Department of Cardiology". One professor, 3 docents, 2 assistants, 3 laboratory assistants works at the department now. Together with educative activity scientific research works also are carried out by specialists of the department. Nowadays 3 months courses are intended for doctors with nearly 10 years of work experience. Duration of other courses depends on specialization of post graduate students and subjects of these courses and lasts from 15 days till 2,5 months. Employees of the department actively participate at all medical and scientific conferences such as, International Symposium on Rontgenology and Radiology, International Conference on Actual Problems of Cardiology, the First Congress of Phthisiatrician and Pulmonologists of Azerbaijan, the First Eurasia Congress on Gastroenterology, "Intervenciale kardiologiya" International Conference held in Italy, etc. During last 15 years of 70 years of department’s activity totally 34 general and 114 thematic improvement courses have been held and totally 5094 doctors participated at these courses, 13 doctor theses and more than master theses have been developed as the result of scientific researches carried out and 32 monographs, 54 text books, manuals, methodical materials have been prepared and more than 2000 different scientific books, articles, theses of conferences, congress and symposiums have been published. The department organizes different conferences, seminars, symposiums in the republic where local and foreign doctors, scientists participate.
    Department of Pediatrics

The Department of Pediatristics of the Azerbaijan State Advanced Training Institute for Doctors named after A. Aliyev (ASATID) operates within the Clinical Children's Hospital. Main goal of the department is to develop specialized pediatricians, also improvement of knowledge of doctors about diagnostics and treatment of childhood disease independently of where do they work. The Department of Pediatrics was established in 1935 and its first director was Prof. S.G Shtain. At the first period the department was established within the Department of Pediatristics of the Second Clinical City Hospital, after one year it had been moved to the Children's Hospital #1. E.Y.Gindes (1946-1951), A.O.Useynov and T.A.Listergarten also led the department next years. Under the direction of E.Y.Gindes scientific research work on "Malaria of newborn children" had been conducted at the department (by Kutilova R.I). Next years, specialists of the department had deal with the problems of acute intestinal infections, brucellosis and typhoid fever of children. In 1963–2003 years clinical base of the Department was the Children's Hospital #3. Since 2004 year the department operates within the Clinical Children's Hospital. Prof. N.M.Israfilov was a director of the department from 1969 to 1994 years. During this period (25 years) 3 doctor theses and 14 master theses have been defended, acute intestinal infections and nephrology problems of children have been studied by specialists and assistants of the department. Employees of the department conducted consultative-methodical service to regional hospitals of the republic. Doctors have been sent for improvement courses to foreign countries such as Bulgaria, Mongolia and Turkey. Assistant L.T.Jafarova and V.Y.Dikova, who was a chief laboratory assistant in the department, studied and discovered "The phenomenon of "sickle-shaped erythrocytes" during the sickle-shaped cell anemia of children" in 1962. Specialists of the department L.Z.Ahmadova (1970), A.N.Mammadbeyova (1970), Tahmazkhanov H.M. (1973), N.A.Aliyeva (1983), A.M.Yusubova (1987), A.S.Babayeva (1991), M.S.Garakhanova (1993), Z.M.Guliyeva (1994) had defended master theses and A.I.Hasanov had defended doctor thesis in 1994. Since 1994 Prof. A.I.Hasanov is a director of the department. During this period spesialists of the department K.K.Burziyeva (2000), S.Aliyeva (2004), S.T.Rustamova (2006), F.A.Garayev (2007), Z.Mikayılova (2008) have defended master theses and L.Z.Ahmedova has defended doctor thesis in 2007. Courses on "Pediatristics. General improvement", "Modern problems of Pediatristics", " Children’s respiratory system diseases ", "Children’s age allergology", "Actual problems of Pediatristics", "Selected problems of Pediatristics", "Emergency Pediatristics", "Specifications of adaptation period of newborns", "Actual problems of neonatology", "Physiology and pathology in early childhood period" are being conducted by the department. Successful results of scientific research works realized by employees of the department are applied to process of diagnostics and treatment of patients. Three rationalizing proposes and patents have been discovered by department’s specialists. They are: "Determining the severity of inflammation of the kidneys of children", "The method of prophylaxis of recurrences of glomerulonephritis of children " and "Application of radiometry for treatment of children’s nephrology" by Prof. L.Z.Ahmedova and "Prediction of hypertrophic changes of right cardio atrial" by S.Rustamova (2004). The department cooperates with different institutions such as ASMU, Scientific Research Institute of Pediatrics, Scientific Research Institute of Gynecology, National Prophylactics Scientific Research Institute, urological Clinique of Republic and several private medical institutions and hospitals. Also the department continues to cooperate with Scientific Research Institute of Pediatrics of Academy of Science of the Russian Federation.
    Department of Psychiatry and Narcology

Department of Psychiatry and Narcology of the Azerbaijan State Advanced Training Institute for Doctors named after A. Aliyev (ASATID) had been established in 1970. The clinical base of the department is situated within the Baku City Mental Neurological Dispensary. Education program of the department is intended for post graduate education of psychiatrists, narcologists, psychotherapists, sexologists and other doctors on psychiatry, narcology, psychotherapy, sexopathology, psychosomatic disorders. The education program consists of general improvement courses, improvement courses for attestation and certification, improvement courses for getting higher level of certification. Prof. Hasanov Khamis Abdulhasan was a first director of the department when it was established in 1970. He had graduated the Azerbaijan State Medical University in 1948 and continued his education at the Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Psychiatry in Moscow and defended master thesis in 1954. In the same year he came back to Baku started to work as an assistant at the Azerbaijan State Medical University. Doctor Hasanov continued his scientific researches on alcohol psychosis and defended doctor thesis on "Clinic of acute alcohol psychosis" in 1960. During 1960-1963 years prof. Hasanov worked as deputy director of Scientific Research Institute of Experimental and Clinical Medicine within the National Academy of Sciences. In 1963 he became a deputy rector of Azerbaijan State Medical University and in 1964 - rector of the same University till 1968 year. The further pedagogical activity of Prof. Hasanov was related with the Department of Psychiatry and Narcology of the Azerbaijan State Advanced Training Institute for Doctors named after A. Aliyev. He is an author of more than 140 scientific works, including 6 monographs, 8 methodical manuals, the first text-book in Azerbaijan named "Psychiatry" (1967) and "Alcoholism" manual for doctors (1987). Prof. Kh.A.Hasanov died in 1999. Now a director of the department is Docent Gafarov Teymur Ali. He works at the department since 1984 and since 1999 he is a director of the department. He had defended master thesis in 1987 in Moscow Scientific Research Institute of General Psychiatry. Then Gafarov continued his scientific research works on problems of self-understanding during mental diseases and using the results of these researches defended doctor thesis in 2000. Besides the education process PhD. Gafarov is leading the planning and implementation of scientific research activity of the department. He is an author of 71 scientific works and 5 of them are methodical manuals. One of directions of scientific activity of the department is studying of problems related with the impact of psychogenic traumas on refugees and IDPs. Realization of scientific research work on theme "Clinical features, differential diagnosis and treatment of somatoform disorders during mental diseases" during 2013-1018 years is planned. The scientific work on "Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective psychosis and affective disorders clinic and the effects of long-term dynamics and their implications for treatment and rehabilitation measure" planned for 2008-2013 years is going on.

Gafarov T.A. accomplishes consultative diagnostic work on certain days of the week in the clinical base of the department. About the department

Department of Neurology and Physiotherapy of the Azerbaijan State Advanced Training Institute for Doctors named after A. Aliyev (ASATID) was established in 1948 and is situated in the Clinical Hospital named after Academician M.Mir-Kasimov. Main goal of the department is to develop neurologists and improve of doctors’ skills on doagnostics and treatment of neurological diseases independently from their specialities. Docent A.B.Mustafayev was a creator and a director of the department during 22 years. Mustafayev together with his assistamt V.V.Argenov organized post graduate improvement courses for doctors. Honored Doctor of Azerbaijan Nazim Molla-zadeh led the department from 1970 till 1990 and under his leadership 11 master theses have been defended within the department. In 1978 department of physiotherapy and department of neurology have been jointed. During 1990-1994 years T.Y.Kurdyumova was a director of jointed department of neurology and physiotherapy. Scientific researches conducted by her covered clinical and genetic specifications of cerebral diseases. Annually 80-100 doctors improve their qualifications carrying out 4-5 courses. At the same time doctors from CIS republics participate at post graduate improvement courses. Staff of the department consists of 2 PhD., 2 docents and 2 assistants. Since 1994 year R.K.Shiraliyeva is a director of the department. R.K.Shiraliyeva have defended doctor thesis in 1995 in SRI Neurology of Medical Academy of the Russian Federation. She continues researches for studying of disseminated sclerosis working in Russia and Azerbaijan. Doctor Shiraliyeva is an author of a text-book, methodical manuals, neurological vocabulary and a book published in Azeri language and books which are very important for students of Medical University such as "Neurological diseases" (2003), "Neurology"(2007), "Clinical neurology" (2009). In addition to the educational process Professor Shiraliyeva leads planning and implementation of the research activities of the department. Her scientific articles have been published on scientific journals of foreign countries. "National Association of neurologists" have been established by specialists of the department. Professor Shiraliyeva is a president of the association. Regular seminars, conferences for neurologists of the republic are organized by the association. The first "National neurology" journal in Azerbaijan is published in 2012 and Shiraliyeva is a chief editor of the journal.

Scientific works of the department

Main direction of the department’s scientific activity is epidemiology of head-aces and influence of social and economic issues. One of important scientific researches of the department is diagnostics, prophylactics and treatment of head aces.

Treatment activity of the department

Diagnostics, prophylactics and treatment of head aces is one of important scientific researches of the department. Employees of the department and chair carry out treatment and prophylactic activity for provision of health care service to patients. Neurological center has been established within the department according to the resolution of the Ministry of Health and corresponding scientific and treatment activity is being realized works in this center. For treatment of neurological patients the ministry of health supplies all needed medicaments. Specialists of the department take an active part in treatment of patients of Neurological Department of the Clinical Hospital and carry out consultations for other health care institutions of Baku. Treatment methods of patients with complicated diagnoses are being discussed by specialists of the department at conferences and seminars, modern technological equipment are being used for diagnostic and treatment of diseases in correspondence with modern specifications. Emergency neurological aid direction and neuro-rehabilitation methods are also being applied to treatment in stationary.
    The Department of Venereology

The Department of Venereology is the third department established within the Azerbaijan State Advanced Training Institute for Doctors named after A. Aliyev (ASATID). The first 5 months course in the departmnet had been conducted from february 7 till une 21 in 1936. The first clinical base of the department was the Institute of Skin and Venerological Diseases, then the department had been moved to the Clinical Hospital #3 in Sabunchu settlement and Venereological Dispensary was given to the department as an additional clinical base. Large opportunities were developed in Venereological Dispensary for improvement and qualification of doctors. Today the department is situated in that dispensary. Main goal of the Department of Dermatology and Venereology is to develop qualified specialists on dermatology and venereology, also to improve skills of all dermatologists and venereologists on diagnostics and treatment of diseases independently from their specializations. Education activity in the department is organized on higher level. Modern educative and technical resources are being used for education process, education programs are worked out in correspondence with needs of post graduate students. Annually thematic courses are being conducted according to new themes and all these points allow to make knowledge and skill level of doctors much more higher. The first director of the department was Phd. Prof. M.M.Huseynov , who led the department from 1935 to 1981 year. He was born in Gedebey district of Azerbaijan in 1901, graduated medical department of Baku State University in 1923 and appealed to medical department of Moscow State University in 1925. Prof. M.M.Huseynov had studied for post graduate education at one of the most leading clinique of Germany during 1927-1929 years. After coming back from Germany he worked as a docent at the Department of Dermatology and Venereology of the State medical University and director of Institute of Dermatology and Venereology in Baku. Prof. Huseynov established Dermatology and Venereology Dispensary in Baku and worked there as a doctor during 1942-1948 years. He accomplished very important scientific research works on skin porphyria, skin diseases of oil industry workers, eczema, syphilis, gonorrhea, and fungal diseases. Fundamental research works had been done by Prof. Huseynov on late skin porphyria and most of problems related with diagnostics, clinics and treatment of the diseases had been solved. Besides it, he had suggested several original treatment methods of dermatological diseases. Prof. Huseynov is an author of more than 80 scientific publications. Besides his large scientific activity, Prof.Huseynov created and developed methods for qualification of dermatologists and venereologists in Azerbaijan. Long years he was a chairman of Scientific Society of Dermatologists and Venereologists of Azerbaijan, chairman of Attestation Commission of the Ministry of Health of the Azerbaijan Republic, honored member of Scientific Society of Dermatologists and Venereologists of the former USSR. The first Doctor of Science of Azerbaijan on dermatology, Prof. Ibrahim Ismayil-zadeh had been elected as the second professor of the department in 1948. He was born in ganja in 1898. After graduating from Medical University in Moscow he carried out two years improvement courses in Germany during 1923-1925 years, accomplished corporative scientific works together with well-known German scientist Tsumbush. Prof. I.M.Ismayil-zadeh was the first who studied oncological specifications of industrial oil of Apsheron in 1929 and it was the basis of his doctor thesis. He had done great work for organization of education in Azeri language. He published several text-books in Azeri and vocabulary of medical terminology in Latin-Russian-Azeri languages. Scientific works of the professor had been published o scientific journals of Azerbaijan and Moscow. From 1948 till 1962 he was a chairman of Azerbaijan Scientific Society of Dermatologists and Venereologists. Very important period for improvement of the department is connected with professor G.M.Huseyn-zadeh. He started to work as an assistant of the department and in 1981 became a director of it. High level scientific research works had been carried out during the period of his leading of the department. Together with older specialists of the department young doctors also have been developed within the department. They are: J.J.Agakishiyev, S.H.Kerimov, M.M.Cavadzadeh, T.Sh.Shukurov, etc. under the leadership of professor Huseyn-zadeh those young doctors improved their skills and became great doctors and scientists. He is an author of nearly 180 scientific works, including 2 text-books, 3 monographs, 20 methodic manuals. from 1988 till the end of his life (2004) G.M.Huseyn-zadeh became a professor of the department. In 1988 J.J.Agakishiyev became a director of the department. He started to work at the department in 1982 as an assistant and in 1988 he became a docent, in 1992 defended doctor thesis and was awarded with title of professor. Prof.Agakishiyev is an author of more than 100 scientific articles, including 2 monographs and 1 medical vocabulary. Two PhD.Masters defende theses under his leadership. Now PhD. Senan Kerimov is a director of the department. In recent years quality of education activity of the department has been increased, modern educative and technical resources are being used in the process, education program developed in correspondence with modern requirements. Thematic courses on new themes are being organized every year, new and young specialists such as M.Ismayilova and N.Akhundova are being attracted to scientific activity of the department and they do their best for improvement of qualification of doctors and conducting of new scientific works.
